Domain names
Find a domain name for your business, and check it's free.
Type your business name and see straight away whether the .co.uk, .com and .uk are taken. Then get it free with your website, or buy it yourself in two minutes. Either way it's registered in your name.
Check your name
Is it free?
Your domain's first year and your hosting are free with every website, always registered in your name, not ours. Your site can be live in as little as a week.
Two ways to get it
Free with your website, or yours today.
Get it free with your website
Ask for the name with your website and we register it for you, in your name. The first year costs nothing, and the first year's hosting is free too. After that we invoice the renewal once a year, at the registrar's price.
Buy it yourself, and we take it off
Want it safe before anyone else gets it? Buy it at Porkbun from the checker above. It sits in your own account from the first minute. Keep the receipt, and what you paid comes off the price of your website.
Which ending?
.co.uk, .com or .uk?
For a business working in the UK, the short answer is .co.uk, and .com as well if it's free.
.co.uk
Still the ending most people in Britain expect from a local business. If your customers are in the UK, start here.
.com
Worth having if you sell beyond the UK, or if it happens to be free - people type it out of habit. Many businesses take both and send one to the other.
.uk
Shorter, and run by Nominet, the same registry as .co.uk. Fine to use, but less familiar to customers, so it works best as a second address.
Choosing a name
A domain name that works for a trade.
- 1
Say it out loud
You'll read it over the phone and someone will write it on a van. If you have to spell it, choose again.
- 2
Skip hyphens and numbers
"Joes-plumbing-4u" gets misheard and mistyped. Each extra character is one more chance for an email to go astray.
- 3
Add your town or trade if your name is gone
joesplumbinghaywardsheath.co.uk is long, but it is clear, and it tells Google where you work.
- 4
Check it isn't someone else's
Search the name on Companies House and the UK trade mark register before you commit. A free domain doesn't mean a free name.
- 5
Make sure it is in your name
Whoever is the registrant owns it. If a web designer registers it in theirs, moving away later can mean losing it.
Domain questions
Questions about domain names.
Is the domain really free?
The first year is, with any website we build — from £350 for a three-page site. We register it in your name, not ours, and the first year's hosting is free too.
What happens after the first year?
If we registered it, we invoice you once a year for the renewal at the registrar's price. If you bought it yourself, it renews in your own account and nothing comes through us.
Can I buy it myself and still have you build the site?
Yes. Buy it at Porkbun from the checker on this page and it's yours from that moment. Keep the receipt and we take what you paid for the first year off the price of your website.
I already have a domain. Can you use it?
Of course. You keep it wherever it is, and we point it at your new site. If it turns out to be registered in someone else's name, we'll help you get it moved into yours.
Do I need a website to own a domain?
No. You can buy one now to keep it safe and build the site later. Plenty of people do exactly that once they find their name is free.
How quickly can the website be live?
A website in 1–2 weeks from when we have your content — so it can be live in as little as a week, on the domain you've just found.
Found your name? Let's put a website on it.
A fixed price before we start, your domain's first year and hosting free, and a website live in 1–2 weeks.
